Hello! I'm Rachel! I've been teaching private lessons and general music for over 10 years. I graduated from Messiah College in 2013 with a Bachelor of the Arts, and I received my Master's of Music Education from Boston University in 2019. I have taught private lessons in studios mainly, but am super excited to be teaching online! I have taught private lessons in Stroudsburg, Pa; Columbus Oh; and Mansfield, Oh. I also have taught choir and general music in schools for 6 years. I am currently also playing guitar for my church's worship team, which I have played for over 16 years.
I have been teaching private lessons since I was in college. I started on my main instrument at the time, clarinet, and have since branched out to other woodwinds that I was also proficient and skilled in (saxophone, flute, and oboe). Within the past 10 years, I started teaching guitar and voice as well, as I was playing/ singing those more often in church settings. I am classically trained on the clarinet, and self taught on everything else! I have had some mentors along the way who have helped me become even better at each instrument.
One of the reasons I love private lessons so much is because we can go at the pace of the student. We can explore different styles of music the students enjoys, and also styles that may be new to them. If a child is in band, I usually will ask them what they are working on in band so I can continue to help them in that area, while also exploring pieces of music on our own. I like to use beginner books, my favorite to use is Essential Elements. For guitar, I like to focus on being able to finger pick and learn how to play chords.
As I mentioned, I like going at the pace of the student in lessons. If we are struggling in an area of playing/singing, then we will focus on that area until we've gotten better at it. Everything in music is related to each other, so I make sure my students understand that while we may be working on, for example, dynamics, that does not mean that anything else we already learned does not apply. It's all about bringing everything together to make our best possible sound! If a student is further ahead, I like to challenge them by giving them more difficult pieces to practice.
