2013- Berklee Urban Service Award
I have a love and passion for music and I am equally passionate about passing on all of the knowledge I have gained over my years to the students I get to work with. In 2013, I graduated from Berklee College of Music with a degree in Electric Bass Performance. At Berklee, I was mentored by some of the most amazing musicians in the world and I am delighted to get opportunities to mentor others like I was while in school.
Teaching for me began as a complete accident but the love for it has been undying ever since. At the Berklee Day Sessions Summer Program in 2011, I played in and directed ensembles of musicians aged 10-13. I bonded with a guitar player and on the day of the recital, got my first private instruction student for bass guitar. Since then, I have taught at the Boys and Girls Club of Blue Hill in Dorchester, MA and the Hamilton-Garrett Music and Arts Academy in Roxbury, MA. Over the years, I have gotten to know some amazingly talented students and I have loved watching them grow musically and personally.
I have a series of written exercises for all levels of students for each instruments, as well as a list of songs I assign to help them build a repertoire. However, the interests of the student come first and foremost. I try to keep the material close to the styles the student favors so they stay engaged and enjoy the challenge of learning their favorite songs.
Keeping music fun is the most important way to keep a student motivated and engaged. Many challenges come along the way with students, and I make it a goal to attack problem areas efficiently and effectively so that the most progress can be made while still maintaining enjoyment. What I've found is that students appreciate this method because it shows that I am paying attention and that I do care about their progress. It's the give and take of teaching that keeps both of us learning.
Rahsaan is an extremely talented player who relates really well with my teenagers. He has them both interested in learning. Given Rahsaan's expertise, it's clear that even though they are beginners now, they can learn from him for a long time to come. He's a real nice laid-back guy and both the boys really enjoy their time with him. I've been very impressed and pleased with the experience.
