Overview:
I love working with students and sharing my love of music. I have taught in Schools of Music and given private lessons for many years. Through my study and experience, I have attained professional level performance and compositional skills. I teach classical and popular music for both piano and violin. Through study and practice, my students acquire a deeper appreciation of music, personal enrichment and the enhancement of their musical skills.
I enjoy teaching all ages and all skill levels. My lessons are given in the student's home, not in a studio.
EXPERIENCE
I have been a private piano teacher, accompanist and arranger in Tucson and Los Angeles since 1980.
I am currently teaching piano and violin in the Canoga School of Music, Canoga Park, CA and giving private lessons as far as 15 miles from my home in Canoga Park, CA. My past teaching experience has included the Las Virgenes Unified School District and eleven years teaching piano and music theory at Learning Tree University. I enjoy introducing beginners to the piano or the violin and helping advanced students continue to learn. I look forward to working with students of all ages!
METHODS USED
I stress the basics: scales, arpeggios and chords for piano and scales and double stops for violin. In regard to the piano, I have students practice each hand alone before combining them. Generally two pieces are assigned for students to work on and that work is continued for several weeks.
I emphasize sight reading and rhythm. These are two aspects of music that are difficult for many. In regard to reading, the names and purposes of the various signs and symbols must be learned. This study, sometimes called solveggio, is an aspect of the broader study of music theory.
LESSON STYLE
I try to relate the student's study of their instrument to their school work and what music they might be studying in school or encountering in their daily lives. With adults it is important to discover what other music lessons they have had and what their experiences with music have been.
During lessons I give much attention to detail and attempt to balance discipline with the student's enjoyment of the experience. In addition, humor is an important part of the student’s experience and acknowledging their accomplishments encourages the students to learn.
