I began piano lessons as a young child and was fortunate to have talented teachers who instilled in me a love of music and especially the joy of playing the piano. I continued my studies at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. I received a Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance and a certificate in Education. I still love to play the piano old favorites and new pieces in many genres. I have often worked as a church musician and have accompanied various community choirs.
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching piano to local children in the neighborhood as a teen-ager and have always found the experience to be interesting, rewarding challenging and enjoyable. I have experience teaching students of all ages (5 to 80), with a wide range of abilities and interests. I have prepared students who are interested to participate in recitals, festivals and to take exams such as those from the Toronto Conservatory of Music. Some students do not benefit from such experiences and may even find them detrimental.
METHODS USED
There are many method books available, one that I have used is "Piano Adventures" by Nancy and Randall Faber. There are many series of books now available with varied styles of music from beginning to intermediate levels such as those by Martha Mier, Robert Vandall and Christopher. Very young students and sometimes even those who are older have difficulty understanding musical notation and it is useful to teach them by rote while also improving reading skills. Some computer assisted learning can be useful to improve note reading.
LESSON STYLE
Ultimately students must really enjoy what they are doing to be successful in the long term. I try to discern the student's strengths and build on those.
A sense of accomplishment and progress needs to be maintained with mostly positive feedback and encouragement to strive to be better. The students
interests must be taken into consideration, whatever they may be while pushing to broaden their interests and understand the common elements in all
kinds of music. Including improvisation, composing and theory are important factors. The ultimate goal for me is to have a student acquire the skills to continue playing long after they have taken the last lesson.
