I am a jazz guitarist and educator from New York. I've studied under Bobby Broom, Rodney Jones, Jonathan Kreisberg, Peter Bernstein, and David Rosenthal. I've played at venues in New York City as well as Chicago performing as a sideman and a leader. I have experience teaching guitar, jazz, and music theory to students in the New York Area. I teach online and in-person. I can travel to you. For online, I can use any platform (FaceTime, Skype, Zoom, etc.). I love the guitar stylings of George Benson, Wes Montgomery, and Bobby Broom!
I am pursuing degrees in Music and Psychology from Columbia University. I have immense knowledge of jazz history, music theory, and music in general. I read music proficiently and also teach jazz composition as well as counterpoint and music within the Common practice period. In our lessons, I will provide recommended listening to go along with our guitar-focused studies. I have taught students for the past 5-6 years and I also provide educational concerts at Mosaic Mental Health in Bronx, NY...
For beginning students who are children, I typically start with basic guitar studies. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, we will begin learning songs and playing together. For adults, I go off of what the student wants to learn and guide my instruction accordingly. I always try to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. I love playing with my students and have seen the beauty of a musical relationship again and again in my lessons. Looking forward!
I typically do not make lesson plans but go off of what a student wants to learn. I can make lesson plans upon request. Usually, for in-person lessons, we will play together and then talk about our playing. I will provide recommended exercises to do in between lessons. I will also recommend music to listen to as well as exercises to do in between lessons. One of the most important things about music is to practice at least 10-20 minutes every day. Skipping days will set you back. 20 minutes every day is better than 3 hours on the weekends only.
Raphael is a phenomenal teacher and guitarist. I highly recommend him to anyone wanting to learn guitar!
