I grew up overseas in several countries, exposed to several types of music, and have played guitar for over 20 years. Although my education was focused on the sciences, I did take music classes as electives while studying. I have an acoustic (with a jack) and electric guitar, as well as an Amplifier should you not have access to a guitar or amplifier. I play mostly classic rock and rhythm and blues as well as some lead guitar. I recommend beginners start out with an acoustic, but if you prefer to do so with an electric, that is fine too. That is how I started!
I used to play in local bands but no longer have the time. Teaching students gives me the opportunity to be more engaged with music and to play more often. If you are willing to practice and follow the finger exercises as shown regularly, you will be playing solo in a matter of weeks. If you cannot devote a minimum of 3 hours/week to practice, it will take more time. I like to begin with basic theory as this will go a long way in developing your general appreciation for music, how much theory we get into will depend on you.
As mentioned above, I like to begin with basic theory. Once the student has grasped the basic concept of half and full steps, major and minor note, flats and sharps, we can start practicing some tunes. In the beginning I try to incorporate 10 minutes at the beginning of every lesson, as well as some key finger exercises. Parallel to the theory and exercises, we will begin with the major chord finger positions, and then progress to minors, etc.. Students who practice more than three hours a week can expect to play simple tunes in the first month.
I don't have a set process for every student. Every student is different and learns at their own pace. Depending on your preference of theory or practice and the type of music you aspire to play, I will tailor the teaching approach. By trying to find out the student's goals, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants. It is important to make your learning experience as enjoyable as possible so that you are encouraged to paly regularly. I work with students music preferences to this end.
