I was fortunate enough to have gone to school in a small town where music was part of the standard curriculum. From kindergarten to sixth grade we had music class twice a week. In junior high and high school I was in the school band and participated in choir and theatre. I was also acitvely participating in a local church choir as well. In college I took piano and I have been teaching now for about seven years.
Awards:
1993- I was president of my high school band my senior year and received an award for outstanding musical leadership.
Overview:
Music is an essential part of my life. I believe music is the last tangible magic left in society. In 1988, I got a guitar as a Christmas gift. Building from what I learned in school, I taught myself how to play guitar. At sixteen I started playing in bands outside of school. I continue to this day to play in bands. I have played in Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Louis, and several towns and cities in Illinois. I have played in front of crowds that numbered in the thousands. I was fortunate enough to open for national acts such as Theory of a Deadman, Halestorm, and Copper. My wife and I have moved our family to Florida recently and I hope to continue to spread the magic of music here.
EXPERIENCE
I taught a few people here and there in the late nineties. Seven years ago I started teaching again and it became my full time job. I have given private lessons at my home as well as local Sprigfield, Illinois music stores. Prior to moving to Florida, I taught at Rolens Brothers Music and Daddy O's Music Shack. Both are located in Springfield Illinois. I have taught every walk of life. Children, businessmen, soldiers, mailmen, and politicians to name but a few. I have had a few students who have tried out for "American Idol" and one student even made it on to "America's Got Talent".
METHODS USED
I teach an esoteric method based on numbers. If you can read an analog clock, know how many days are in a week, and how many months are in a year, you can learn music. I use these foundations, that we we're all taught from a very young age, to put music into perspective for the students. This works with all ages. Over the years I have refined my method to be as simplistic as possible. The three primary principles I teach are Pattern, Degree, and Pitch (note names). The three primary attributes of music are Sense, Control, and Alter. I can teach students how to read music and understand musical notation. (Staff, cleff, note duration, tempo, etc.)
LESSON STYLE
Seeing students excel at their instrument of choice is most rewarding. My goal is to help my students understand music so deeply that they can play any instrument they want. They need to know two things about their instrument. 1.How the instrument is tuned. 2. How to get sound out of the instrument. Mistakes are a prerequisite for learning. They have to be made in order to learn what is correct. I teach my students to practice like they are performing. I encourage them to play through their mistakes. Just keep going.
