I am a passionate, young instructor of the jazz idiom with an emphasis in saxophone, music theory, and hand percussion.Gorwing up, I had grew close to an elderly couple how gave me a music lesson scholarship where they both taught me the art of Jazz starting at the age of 12. I had also began playing classical saxophone in elementary school and continued throughout school as a also took Jazz piano lessons. My teacher owned a non profit in which she used to create performance opportunities for me as well as other gifted students of hers. In Spring 2017, a completed my double major in Music tech and Jazz studies at UMBC. I have performed and various places around the east coast, including blues alley, Silver Spring Jazz fest, Howard theatre, and the Kennedy center. My love for jazz theory and extrapolation of jazz theory into other genres has made me a multi facet musician with many dynamics. I also play with a 10 piece RnB/Hip hop orchestra called "Kontrolled Khaos". I play saxophone, piano, and drums, however, I will be working on my masters starting Fall 2018.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience dates back to the beginning of high school. Though it wasn't music education, I am very much use to private teaching. I started my education career at "Kumon of Bowie Math and Reading Center," a tutoring center created to emphasis one-on-one assistance for students in need. After working there for five years, I pursued my undergraduate education until Spring 2017. During college, I also worked as an ear training mentor. Post graduation, I started working at a charter school in Baltimore, City Neighbors Hamilton where I grew an even bigger passion for teaching.
METHODS USED
My methods are largely based on learning the basics of theory and how to apply it intuitively in music (no matter what genre). I teach this at a patient pace, with teaching diatonic scales first, then transcending those scales into arpeggiated patterns. Learning this way not online teaches the mind, but also teaches the muscle memory of a person to remember the basics before moving to an intermediate level of theory. I will also use many Jazz and Latin Standards to apply the theoretical patterns learned. Artist included will be Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Pat Methany, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, and Sonny Rollins. I also communicate with my students as well to see specifically what they would like to learn/understand more of. Also, for my piano students we will be use the "Hanon Complete" book to work on speed and strength.
LESSON STYLE
My approach to teaching is based on a large amount of communication between the students, the parents, and I. I love to know what my students are thinking in order to enhance what they are looking for in musicianship. I believe that musicians should be allowed to play and learn freely, however, the foundation given by learning jazz theory, gives any musicianship a bigger dynamic of playing for whatever genre they specifically like to play. I play a lot of RnB/Hip hop performances as well. The most important part of my teaching for my students is that I fuel a passion that they already have for music.
