My name is Rebecca and I am a native Texan who has just moved to the DC area from New York City. I am passionate about both teaching and performing! As a performer, I have enjoyed performing in many regional productions of musicals and operas. Some of my favorite roles include Maria in The Sound of Music, Cosette in Les Miserables, Belle in Beauty and the Beast, Kathy in The Last 5 Years, Nella in Gianni Schicchi, and Edith in The Pirates of Penzance. I have also performed with the prestigious Cincinnati May Festival Chorus and had concert appearances at Disney Hall in Los Angeles, New World Stages in New York City, The Sheldonian Theatre in Oxford, England, among many others. In addition, Rebecca I am a clinician for many master classes- this year teaching and performing at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington. Most recently I have enjoyed working for Disney and singing back-up for Kevin Spacey!
I began teaching piano 10 years ago while attending Texas Tech University. I have taught students ages 3 years old to 65 years young! Additionally, I have been teaching voice for 8 years. I have taught privately, taught at middle schools and high schools, and even was an adjunct professor at NYU from 2008-2010 while I was in graduate school.
For beginning piano students I recommend Alfred, John Thompson, or Piano Adventures books. (If you already have books that you have used on your own r with aother teacher, I am happy to use those as well!) Additionally, I will choose a recital piece applicable to their level that the student will work on for a few weeks/ months at a time to be performed at their first recital performance. For beginning voice students, we will work with a few pieces throughout the semester, in addition to sight-reading and theory exercises. From these we will pick a piece to be memorized and performed at the student's first recital. Adult piano and voice students: I work with you to figure out your goal and what you are interested in and will guide and tailor my instruction accordingly.
I work to foster a love of music and a desire to excel in each of my students. I want them to practice because they love it and want to succeed! I also feel that it is important to be a well rounded musician, so we will focus on theory, sight reading, composition, musicianship, performance-practice, and other important and fun aspects of music. I believe that it is important to be grounded in a classical foundation (for both piano and voice students), but I also make sure to bring in pieces of the student's favorite style- which I find helps motivate them to practice and enjoy lessons even more. I am passionate and creative and look forward to bringing on many new students of all ages and levels
