Hello! I am a flutist and piccoloist who is passionate about teaching others. I am currently working towards a Masters in Flute Performance at Colorado State University. I just recently graduated from Florida State University this December with a Bachelors in Instrumental Music Education, a Bachelors in Music Theory, and a Specialized Study in Flute Performance. During my time at FSU, I worked with students in a variety of settings including a semester long student teaching internship with the Vero Beach High School band program. This experience gave me a variety of methods to help my students reach their musical goals.
I have been teaching in and out of the classroom for the last five years. I am currently employed as a Substitute Teacher with Brevard Public Schools. As a music education student, I have regularly taught lessons, coached small ensembles, and led full-class rehearsals for years. I have also been hired to work as a marching band staff member for Sebastian River High School, Eau Gallie High School, and Vero Beach High School. In addition, I am a camp counselor for the Florida State University Summer Music Camps. Working with students in such a variety of settings has helped me see the individual needs and goals of each student. I am passionate about helping students identify and meet these goals so that they can develop a lifelong relationship with music.
For beginning flutists, I typically start with the Rubank Elementary Method so that they can have a basic grasp of the fundamentals. Beyond that, I introduce books according to their musical goals and needs. Some of the books my students have studied out of are the Rubank Intermediate/Advanced books and the Melodious and Progressive Studies edited by Cavally. In addition, I have each student regularly work on solo literature so that they can put their hard work on fundamentals into practice. When selecting solo literature, the student and I work together to find literature that exposes them to a variety of musical styles that they enjoy learning. I have even had students learn to flute beatbox!
My goal as a teacher is to help students cultivate a lifelong passion for music! To do this, I first identify a student's musical goals. These goals could be things like getting a superior rating at solo and ensemble, auditioning into an honor band, learning more about a genre of music, or just to have fun! Once I understand their musical goals, I will do everything in my power to help my student reach that goal. I will tailor my instructional material, pace of lessons, and approach to teaching so that every student learns the things that interest them, and has fun while they do it!
