I am a dedicated and enthusiastic teacher with a passion for sharing music. I have a Bachelors degree in Flute Performance as well as a Masters of Arts in Teaching with an emphasis on instrumental music. As a flutist I have had the privelage of performing all over the world including China and Ireland. I also regularly substitute and perform with the New Haven Symphony Orchestra and the Waterbury Symphony. I have been a public school music teacher for 12 years teaching band and recorder. I teach all levels and ages.
I have been teaching privately since I was in college with students of all ages and levels. I also have a Masters degree in education which trained me to teach at the highest level. I have been a music teacher in the public school system for 12 years working with all types of learners. I have been both a middle school and elementary school band, recorder and chorus teacher and love every minute! I work to find ways so that every student of mine feels successful and has fun! My students come back after they have graduated my school programs and always tell me how well they were prepared for the next level.
I always start by asking my students what their goals are and what types of music they enjoy playing. There are so many ways of teaching music I want to start where the student is comfortable and excited about learning. Duets are also a major part in my teaching as they develop many skills and playing with other people is so much fun! My philosophy is to give my students challenging music while supporting them to make sure they can be successful. I give my students efficient strategies for practicing so they can make the most out of the session.
My approach to teaching is unique in that I focus on teaching the student as a whole. I work with students to not only achieve their musical goals, but to build confidence, take risks, learn problem solving, foster creativity, and have fun! I push my students through challenges, and I am always there to support them. My students often will say they thought they wouldn't be able to do something, but then with the strategies I give them they are proud of their accomplishments. The biggest reward is for me to see the excitement in my students' faces when they accomplish their goals!
