Hello, I have several names to go by, choose one and I promise to respond--Rebecca, Becca, Bex-- take you pick! I am a graduate of Cal State University, Fullerton with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education, and have recently completed the teaching program to recieve my teaching credentials. I have an extreme passion for music and teaching and am anxious to share it with my students. Music has always been a part of my life. I have been singing in choirs since I was in the sixth grade. My high school and college choirs, under the direction of Robert Istad and John Tebay, have given me the opportunities to sing for performances at the Hollywood Bowl, Greek Theater, Staples Center, Nokia Theater, and the Honda Center. I have had the privilege to perform with a variety of artists such as Andrea Boccelli, Beck, John Williams, Grizzly Bear, and Eric Whitacre, as well as perform with the LA Philharmonic and the Pacific Symphony. International performances have given me the opportunity to study and sing around Italy, German, and Austria. I have been studying voice with the help of Katherin Rundus, and Linda Leyrer, and my professor Teri Watson has monitored my progress in piano. Music is what I live for each day and it is what has inspired me to continue to pursue a career in teaching. I cannot wait to share the joy that music brings with my students.
I began teaching private lessons about four years ago. Originally I used it as a means to practice teaching but I fell in love with the process and have continued ever since. I have taught at various music studios as an in-studio instructor and also as an in-home instructor. It is my goal to make each lesson enjoyable for the students. I like to keep a balance between classical repertoire and technique while allowing the student to branch out into the realm of popular music if they choose. There are benefits to all genres and I aim to help my students explore their options.
For beginning piano students, I like to use the Piano Adventure book series. They do a very good job at laying out the basics of piano technique in a fun and colorful way for young children. As the students progress through the series I will encourage them to begin learning pieces on their own and eventually preparing them for recital performances. For vocal students, I like to teach based on their ability and style preference. No book is necessary, however they will be required to purchase sheet music. I like to emphasize vocal technique, music theory and performance technique into every lesson. Lesson topics and techniqes vary based upon the age of the student and their interests. I do my best to make every lesson exciting and meaningful!
It is my duty to help my students understand the excitement that music can bring to their lives and to the lives of others around them while secretly helping my students understand the importance of being good human beings. Every student will work at their own their own pace and goals will be set and reached based on their ability. My philosophy on educating a student in music is to make every lesson as enjoyable as possible. Practicing is a must, but I will never hinder a students learning because they did not practice. Every lesson is a new adventure with exciting things to learn and it is my goal to keep them motivated in whatever way I can!
