I have a firm belief as a teacher that you can really enrich someones life through learning and challenge. As long as I can remember I have been surrounded by music. I have been playing drums for over 20 years since the age of nine, and have been playing guitar, keyboards, bass as well as singing for 10 years. I took my passion for music further by enrolling at Roosevelt University, Chicago College of Performing Arts and studied drum set under the direction of grammy award winning drummer Paul Wertico. To complement my studies on drums, I studied jazz theory with reknown bassist and educator Scott Mason and jazz arranging with former Buddy Rich trombonist, Tom Garling. After graduating in May 2011, I have had the oppoutunity to play in major Chicago venues like The Metro, Lincoln Hall, Congress Theater, Reggies, Rosa's and many others. Also, I have been fortuante to have played at locations all over the U.S. and shared the stage with musicians like Warren Haynes and Jimmy Herring (formerly of The Allman Brothers).
My teaching experience goes back 9 years. Before I moved to Chicago for school, I lived with my parents in Springfield, IL and taught private drum lessons out of their basement. Although I did not have a lot of experience teaching, I realized how rewarding it was to see a student learn and gain confidence on their instrument. It was something that I wanted to do more and saw a future in teaching. After I graduated from Roosevelt University I had more time outside of academics to start a teaching practice. In 2011, I worked at Lynn Marcel School of Fine Arts in Hillside, IL. As a drum instructor I helped design a corruculum plan and taught younger students ages 8-14. In 2013 and 2014, I worked at School of Rock in Oark Park, IL teaching drum set, voice, and piano for students of all age groups. This was an interesting and new way of teaching for me because at School of Rock the students not only took private lessons, they got to perform in groups and played a recital at the end of each season. Also in 2014, I worked at The People's Music School in Chicago teaching music theory and group drum lessons for kids ages 5-14 and class sizes of 30+.
For begining students I like to start from a foundational stand point. It is very important to enstill good practice habits and technique in order not to develop bad habits in your playing. For drumming and other instruments, starting with rudiments, learning how to read music, and playing scales are a great way to help a student build their technique and ear up. I think it is really important to ask what kind of music the student is into or show them how the foundational basics can be used in an actual playing situation instead of just a boring regimented routine. With more advanced students, furthering a students development and introducing more challenging concepts is what I focus on teaching. With drumming, I like to incorporate concepts such as polyrhythms, an understanding of different genres, improvisation, and ear training. For students that are preparing to pursue a degree in music, I can help them prepare for an audition because of my experience of being a college music student in the past.
I can't stress enough how music is supposed to be fun! It is a healthy outlet which teaches kids and adults alike the joy of interation with a group of people and can carry out in all kinds of aspects in life. Learning does not have to be boring and with music it is one of the most sacred and treasured things that we have as humans. I focus on trying to inspire a student and have them look forward to their next lesson.
