My name is Rene, I am a flute player and music lover. Music for me is an outlet and a way to express myself. I've been playing flute since I was 13, and music has given me a lot while growing up. Music taught me discipline, it gave me self confidence, brought me friends, taken me to places, and helped me understand myself better. After training as a flute performer at University of California Santa Barbara, I traveled to China and taught students and played at various events. I want to continue learning and share with others skills of playing a musical instrument.
I started teaching in 2012, I took some time off after school and traveled to Shanghai-China. There I taught at Rubato Music, a private music studio. I gave lessons to children and adults, had my first experience introducing the instrument to novice students. I took notes from colleague and learned from more experienced teachers on ways to better explain/demonstrate lesson material. It always make me very happy each time when I see improvements in my students' playing. And I like to help my students advance at their own pace, while providing support and knowledge.
For both my younger and adult students, I like to start lessons with warm ups, then move to technique training, etude, finally to solo pieces, with each lesson including a brief review of the previous lesson. For beginning students, I start with teaching them about breathing, posture, and positioning of the instrument, so students can develop solid foundation, and good playing habits. For more experienced students, I try to find out what they want to improve on and learn, then pick out works suited to their level and interest.
It is very important for me that students not only take away something from each lesson, but also enjoy coming to lessons. I try to always acknowledge students' improvements and be encouraging. I understanding sometimes lessons can be stressful or not so interesting, so I try different ways to teach and guide my students so the process of learning is enjoyable. I want to keep students interested and inspired, I encourage them to play for themselves and their loved ones, and find pieces they like to bring to lessons.
