In 2007, I graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a Bachelor of Science in Music Education. I was a member of the Penn State Marching Blue Band and have participated in several Alumni Blue Band performances since graduating. I went on to earn my Masters of Music in Music Education from Northwestern University in 2012. I enjoyed teaching music in the public school for ten years. In addition to teaching, I have also been the piano accompanist for both middle and high school choirs. I have been the substitute worship leader for a local church since 2007 and have played both woodwind and keyboard parts in many high school musical productions. I enjoy writing my own songs and have performed several times in coffee shops, at Tellus360 in Lancaster City for the Singer-Songwriter series, and on the street as a busker!
I was a middle school band director and general music teacher in a public school for ten years. I instructed beginning students as well as advanced 8th graders in all brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments. Directing and leading concert band, marching band, drum line, and jazz band required me to remain in communication with parents and the community, keep organization and discipline in the classroom, and engage the students with well-prepared lessons and quality band literature. In addition to teaching small group lessons during the day, I also taught several one-on-one private lessons after school (which included piano instruction).
I typically start woodwind students with the Standard of Excellence Comprehensive Band Method series. I like to use the Faber Piano Adventures Series or the Alfred's Basic Adult Piano Course for piano instruction. In addition to the method book, I like to incorporate physical/breathing exercises, supplemental warm-ups, sight-reading, music theory worksheets, and student selected repertoire in lessons. I also encourage students to create their own compositions. In the past, I have digitally recorded many of my students' compositions and have really enjoyed encouraging students to express themselves through original composition.
Music has enriched my life in many ways, connecting me with people in the community and providing a positive outlet for self-expression! I hope to instill that passion in the students that I teach. I strive to provide a safe and fun learning environment for students, but I also stress the importance of practice, dedication, and discipline. I dialogue with students to determine what goals would be realistic for our lessons, and I seek to build trusting and positive relationships as we meet those goals together.
