Overview:
I began playing the xylophone at age 7, from 11-14 I studied the cello and played in my school's orchestra (receiving high remarks) and at age 14, my ears opened up to the sound of electric guitar in all its possibilities to make music. Since then, I am committed to the guitar and have not found an end to its possibilities. In 2012, I graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara with a B.A. in Music and a B.A. in English. I am glad to say I’ve accomplished many things in the world of music; during my formative years as a guitarist, I took a few high school classes but honed most of my craft in private lessons and during my hours of practice at home. While at UCSB, I again studied privately (apart form completing my undergrad) with Mark Covey, a pupil of Christopher Parkening. Since then, as part of further professional development, I’ve briefly studied classical music with Taso Comanescu, ongoing with Marc Teicholz, and Jazz guitar briefly with John Storie in LA. I have performed in worship bands, jazz combos, small contemporary music ensembles and as a solo guitarist for various formal functions throughout Los Angeles and the CA Central Coast for over 10 years. I continue to perform and teach in those same regions. I am now in the Seattle area and taking new students.
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching the guitar and beginner piano in 2012 after I graduated from UCSB and have been teaching in students’ homes and online since then. My teaching experience ranges from teaching adults who want to learn the fundamentals of classical guitar (beginning technique and sight-reading exercises) to teaching young kids interested in modern methods of playing, learning pop and rock songs, and playing solos. In 2015, I taught in afterschool programs, notably for Hancock Park Elementary School in Hancock Park, Los Angeles, for which I taught an excellent group of curious learners as we surveyed modern guitar methods, sight-reading, chords and harmonic progressions, and playing in duos.
METHODS USED
I like working with students in a way where our love of music is the center of our attention, as such musicality is always the goal. For beginner students who’d like to sight-read, I like to start with the Alfred Modern Guitar Method 1 and supplement that with the Mel Bay Modern Guitar Method, Grade 1, or Frederick Noad’s Solo Guitar 1 if we’re learning classical guitar. Alternatively, if the student wishes to take a route in which he/she does not sight-read musical notation, I like to start with basic picking technique, proper guitar positioning, reading tabs and chord diagrams. Once the student grows, we begin to move onto learning songs, harmonic progressions and simple solos. For intermediate players, I like to go into new chord voicings, scales, refining technique and looking into new repertoire. For adult students especially, I look into what they’re interested in playing and get there as soon as possible as their schedules are often busier.
LESSON STYLE
It’s very rewarding when a student develops an interest and love for music in their own way. Each student has specific needs to reach their musical goals, so he/she needs to go at his/her own pace. I like to set long-term goals for each student (whether it’s being able to play a certain song or a certain style) as well as set realistic short-term goals that he/she can complete in a week or so. Encouraging students to keep playing and trying to reach their goals, and bringing up their accomplishments, is a great way I like to keep students focused. Overall, I like to find out what the student likes and add to that things that I know are important for the modern musician and modern guitarist.

Reyes was my teacher for several years. He is a great teacher that makes lessons fun and productive. He worked with me to understand my goals and answered the countless questions I had. Reyes not only taught me the essentials, but he also taught me my favorite songs and how to read guitar tabs and sheet music. I highly recommend!!!

My 8 year old son has learned so much the past 2 months! Much more so than the prior 4-5 months he had lessons in person. It’s amazing he has learned more from Reyes in an online format. That’s talent!

I’ve been with Reyes a few weeks now and have learned so much of my favorite artist. I can ask to learn any song and he gives me a lesson on the spot! I’m trying to tackle music theory as well and Reyes does a great job of breaking it down and providing resources to learn more outside of class time. He’s open to continuous communication throughout the week when I am stuck on something too. A really great teacher who gets straight to the point. Glad I started back on my guitar journey with an awesome instructor!

I am very much enjoying my classes with Reyes! I am an intermediate player and he very quickly started me learning the exact fundamentals I was missing which were holding me back from getting better on my own. After 3 lessons (and a lot of practice ;)), I am already a better classical guitarist!!! Same thing with the 2nd lesson Reyes had me learn, it was exactly what I needed. He has a good eye and ear for the actual playing of the guitar and noticing strengths and weaknesses. I also find that he is knowledgeable in the history of classical music which is great. So not only am I learning classical guitar, but some of its history :) I look forward to all of my lessons with Reyes :)

Reyes is a great teacher. My 8 year old wanted to learn to play a guitar that was gifted to him. We were assigned to Reyes. He is patient, knowledgable and talented. My son works with him weekly via Skype. Reyes is reliable and effective. He knows how to support and encourage. My son has developed his motor skills and is able to switch cords to play songs he likes. He is enjoying his time and I can see his growth.

Reyes made me feel very comfortable during our lessons as I am a beginner. He responds quickly about his availability and when you can book another lesson. I will definitely continue to keep going to him as a guitar teacher.

Our daughter, Emily, loves learning acoustic guitar from Reyes on line. She loves his song choices and his patience with her. He is flexible with lesson times when she can't attend a certain time. We really appreciate his time and his sharing his knowledge.
