Overview:
Music has been a big part of my life since I was in the third grade when I first joined the school choir. Eventually I migrated to playing Saxophone in middle school then to low brass in high school. After high school, I made the trombone my primary instrument, though I continued to play euphonium and tuba in college in various ensembles. I have had the opporunity to play all over the country including the Latin Jazz Grammys, the Playboy Jazz Festival, Central Avenue Jazz Festival, the IAJE conference, and for the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM). I have also had the honor of meeting music icons and supporters such as Quincy Jones, Herbie Hancock, Poncho Sanchez, Cacau, Justo Almario, Joe Lavano, Radiohead, Hugh Hefner, Jorge Lopez, Hilary Clinton and Jay Leno.
EXPERIENCE
Below is a short list of positions that I have held over the last 20 years. I have worked with students grades 3 through 12 in a variety of styles and setting.
Student Equity Director & Introductory Instrumental Teacher - Seattle JazzED (www.seattlejazzed.org) 2015 - Present
Certified Music Teacher (California and Washington)
Music Teacher - Virgil Middle School (Los Angeles, Ca) 2010 - 2015
Asst. Director and Coordinator- Los Angeles Unified School District Honor Marching Band - 1997 - 2015
METHODS USED
For beginning students, we work out of beginning method books such as Essential Elements or Standard of Excellence. This is supplemented with worksheets and personalized exercises specific to their needs. As the student advances, we will begin to introduce duets to begin to understand and play harmonized music. Once the student is able to play within a certain range, I will begin to use solo material as well as music that the student themselves would like to play. It is important that they begin to play the music that they connect with as soon as possible.
With more advanced students, lessons will be catered to filling in the "gaps" in musical theory, technical ability, and ear training. We would also work on current school materials (if in a school program) and/or repertoire that they would like to study.
LESSON STYLE
I have come to learn that all students learn in their own unique way and at their own pace. As a teacher, it is my responsibility to identify these unique traits, encourage their strengths and improve their weaknesses. I also make sure they are learning what they want to learn, but more importantly, teach them what they need to learn to continuously excel musically.

Both my boys are enjoying lessons from Ricardo. Ricardo has made it a fun and educational experience. He is able to describe techniques in kid friendly terms that they can understand and work on. It has been a fabulous experience so far.
