1968- PERFORMED WITH PRO ART CHORALE AT CARNEGIE HALL
Overview:
I started with music at age 10. My mother was an excellent violinist however I learned quickly choosing an instrument you love is an enormous key to success. I heard a young man play the saxophone and was sure this was what I wanted to play. Fortunately my parents supported my effort. Music taught me patience hard work and perseverance. Through high school I was at the top of the musicians in my high school. I went on to Paterson State College and obtained my Bachelor of Science in music education I also attended Montclair State College and obtained 30 credits I was also playing in a wedding band during this time.
EXPERIENCE
After graduation I taught in the public schools. I taught instrumental music 4th thru 6th grade all instruments. I was 20 at that time and learned a great deal. It is so important to have a good working environment with students. I made learning music fun and rewarding. My students were eager to learn and viewed me as one who was interested in their progress. I started writing pop music and scoring it for elementary school. My students loved it. It was so rewarding to watch them play material 2 yrs ahead of their grade level
METHODS USED
I start by putting my students at ease. It is so important to have an environment that is fun and rewarding. I like to use simple songs to teach the fundamentals it gives the student immediate accomplishment and pride in their effort and not boring. Books like Hal Leonard are good tools for this purpose. I concentrate on sound which I believe is the most important skill. Once that improves it becomes so more motivating to the student to practice as they can hear their own success. My goal through all of this is have the student be in charge of the instrument not the other way around. The more a student wants to play better is a great indicator he or she will.
LESSON STYLE
I start each lesson with a greeting and ask how did everything go. I approach teaching music as a honor. My approach always is one who is a cheer leader. I will always accentuate the positive. My style is upbeat and encouraging. I do expect my students to improve and give them the musical tools to do so. I never give assignments that are not attainable My former students were eager to want to improve their playing which I found so rewarding to me and them. I taught as I was taught with compassion and knowing my teacher cared.
