Music has been my passion from a young thanks to my parents that taught Music professionally, in schools as well as privately, and nurtured my passion for music and specifically the trombone. I went to study trombone at California State University Long Beach and Calif State Univ Fullerton. During that time I studied trombone under Dr. Bill Nichols, Jeff Reynolds (Bass Trombone LA Phil) as well as coaching from George Roberts. Over the years I have been fortunate to perform for and with Stan Kenton, Paul Cacia, Stevie Wonder, John Tesh, Doyle Dykes as well as at Lincoln Center (NY NY), Disneyland (11 years) Hollywood Bowl. Kanstul endorsed Performing Artist & Clinician
Most of my time has been consumed performing and learning how to improve as a professional trombonist. During that time I have been performing alongside many great musicians/trombonists. I have taught clinics as a Kanstul Artist as well as coached younger less experienced musicians all of my career as a trombonist. Perhaps due to the teaching environment I grew up in, teaching is in my soul, always has been my passion. While I have taught informally, my time has not allowed for regular scheduled lessons. Now that I have retired from a rigorous performing schedule I am dedicating myself to passing on the musical knowledge I have acquired from many years of performance.
I believe it is essential for beginning students, and for that matter all level of student, to understand what a good trombone sound that they should be attempting to emulate. In the 1940’s popular music included many trombone artists. While today most of the popular music is Pop, Rock N Roll, Rap, Country etc. In the 1940’s it was not unusual to hear Tommy Dorsey, Glenn Miller on the radio.
I prefer use the Rubank Methods (Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced) but will also help the student with whatever method their school band director/teacher should they choose to. If the student chooses to study Bass trombone or Symphonic Tenor (F attachment) there are more specialized methods.
There are two essential parts to learning/improving you ability on an instrument; Instruction and Practice. I will provide instruction, but in order for the student to show improvement they need to practice. When learning any instrument or even for that matter, singing, developing muscle memory is the key. That requires repetition to get the brain to register the process.
Also, I believe that it is fundamental to learning a musical instrument to perform/practice with a group, So I encourage my students to join in a school ensemble or community group.
