I love music! I hope to spread my love of music to you. I have been playing the piano for more than 45 years and enjoy watching students grow with their interest and passion for the piano. I compose and produce music as well, so I can bring perhaps a deeper perspective to studying music and the theory that is behind it. I have a Latin Grammy nomination, a Native American Music Award (NAMA), as well as experience producing and composing commercial music for large companies in many genres. I hope to foster a love and passion for music as well as for the detail that is involved in it.
My teaching experience dates back nearly 30 years now! I have worked with students of many ages and proficiencies. Some students are more inclined to play by ear and others more inclined to read from the music. As a teacher I try to spot the type of learner that a student is, and work to strengthen areas that need exercise. I enjoy working with a wide age range of students, and believe that learning the piano can be a great asset at any age. I am an advocate for using a metronome with practicing to develop a solid sense of rhythm. In music learning to play in time with a rhythm is essential whether one is striving to be a solo performer or in an ensemble.
Typically with beginner students I work through the Alfred's Piano series (Adult and Children) and we focus on performance, technique, ergonomics, theory, and ear training. If a student wishes to work on composition or music production, after a proper foundation, we can explore that as well. Once a student has reached proficiency in the Alfred's series then I like to move into classical or other music as that a student might be interested in. Learning music is an investment, and finding music that the student likes important, as well as having the perseverance to see a piece to it's completion.
Seeing my students develop a passion for music is very rewarding! Every student is an individual and moves at their own pace, I work to asses the areas that I feel the student needs to focus on, and keep a positive, encouraging approach to working through the challenges that playing the piano presents. With both younger and adult students, I give feedback on the pieces by writing notes in a notebook, and or the music itself. I aim to be clear about what and how to effectively practice to achieve a finished and accomplished performance of the pieces which we are working on.
