BA, South Dakota State University, Music Education CLAD certified, San Diego State University
I am a southern California retired music teacher. I graduated with a double major in music from South Dakota State University. I taught instrumental music in public and private schools for the last 36 years. I have also owned and operated my own piano studio. I am married and have three boys. I'm active in church music and I also frequently accompany music students for recitals and rehearsals including school musicals. My experiences have included accompanying music students to Europe numerous times for musical performances.
My teaching experience began in Webster, South Dakota as their high school band director for 11 years. I was then invited to move back to my college town of Brookings, South Dakota to be their middle school band director. I moved to Sioux Falls and taught in the Catholic School System for a number of years. Then I was fortunate to teach my last 11 years in beautiful southern California where I taught instrumental music at elementary to high school levels. This is my fourth year in Denver where I have modified my teaching by going into the classroom and teaching elementary students grade K-5.
I always explore different methods that might fit the age and personality of the student but for keyboard lessons I have found success with the Alfred Piano Method. Instrumental lessons usually follow the method book that is selected by their school band director. Beyond that I have a large library of supplementary music to expand the students interest with new styles and composers.
I'm very flexible with the method books and after I get to know the student I can select a method that would work the best for instruction.I know of the importance and rewards of a good music education. Playing a musical instrument can give a student much self confidence, relaxation and enjoyment. It is rewarding for me to work towards that goal for every student that I have the privilege of teaching. I share my positive musical experiences with my students so that they will continue to explore and appreciate performing and also listening to music. I adapt my teaching style to the age of the student and the personal goals that are set when the lessons begin. There is no greater reward for me than to see the enjoyment that can be gained by a student being successful on their musical instrument.
