Bachelor Degree:
Performed or shared stage with Chet Atkins, Doc Watson, Roy Clark etc
I'm an experienced and knowledgeable instructor focused on developing the student's ability to share music. I have a BA from St. Mary's College and have taught college level courses at Winston-Salem State University, Salem College and NC School of the Arts Community Program. Currently I play solo, in a duo and have four bands in different genres, Jazz, Blues Bluegrass and Praise. I have published 10 books with Mel Bay and have performed with many of the top guitarists in the world including Chet Atkins, Roy Clark, Doc Watson and Charlie Byrd. I teach a variety of instruments and musical styles.
I've been a full-time music teacher and performer in the late 1970s. I've studied with some of the top teachers in the world including Aaron Shear at NC School of Arts who I helped publish his last series of books with Mel Bay. As well as teaching college level guitar and music courses, I have taught an average of 70 students a week for 15 years during the 1990s and early 2000s. My primary emphasis is on performance, technique and music theory. My students regularly perform in church or at open-mics. I've taught voice, all strings and all guitars as well and piano/keyboard and harmonica for many years.
Since I have a variety of instruments and style I teach and since the needs of each student are different, I structure my materials and teaching methods for the individual. I particularly enjoy teaching beginners and young children. I've taught piano from many books including John Thompson books and Hal Leonard Series. Both my mother and grandmother were pianists and teachers. The teach classical guitar from the newer Aaron Shearer books (Mel Bay) and beginning guitar from my own books and other beginning guitar books (especially Mel Bay).
My emphasis is on performance and motivating the student. I set goals for performance at the early stages of study whether it's for family and friends or at an open mic or in church. Without performance as a goal it's hard to motivate the student to practice. I analyze each student's individual learning style whether it's visual or auditory and find ways to help them learn faster and securely. Developing correct technique and hand positions are critical to properly perform music. This includes reading, counting rhythm, and scales. I have no set teaching style and focus on the needs of the student.
