2023 - Kennesaw State University Music Scholarship
I am a dedicated and attentive instructor who enjoys sharing the joy of music and getting to know my students. I will be attending Kennesaw State University on a music scholarship, looking to earn a Bachelor's Degree in Jazz Performance on the drum set. I've been blessed with the opportunity to perform for many events over the span of the 9 years I have been playing the drums, including community events, musical theater, music competitions, restaurants, churches, varying venues, and even the Braves stadium.
I began teaching my freshman year of high school and have continued for the past 4 years. Over those years I have taught several students of varying age and skill levels. One thing I try to emphasize with all my students is being able to play musically. Having a good ear and being able to not only recognize what the other musicians around you are doing, but also decide what the current music is calling for from yourself. These skills are, in my opinion, imperative to the success of any musician, but especially for all of my fellow drummers out there!
For beginning students of any age, I always start with learning the correct way to hold a drumstick and how to get the proper sound out of the drums. Once a good fulcrum and technique are established, I'll typically move on to a brief lesson on terminology. The drum set can be a complicated instrument to set up and use and I like to give my students a good foundation in that area. After this information is learned, I will then inquire as to what inspires the student musically, and we will begin our study accordingly. We will cover the pivotal people within genres that interest the student, why and how the student's favorite drummers played what they did, and how to replicate that playing while also developing our own voice on the instrument.
Adapting to a student's needs is one of the fastest ways to stimulate passion and progression. I try to be as adaptive as possible regarding each student's needs, interests, strengths, and weaknesses. I genuinely care for each student I teach, not only as a musician, but also as a person. I also like to keep my students in a constant state of listening and learning, always discovering new music and learning new songs. I believe playing music itself is a much better teacher than a textbook is. Finally, my first priority with any student is that they are being inspired to be better, no matter what that may look like for them.
