Overview:
I am a drummer and percussionist of 23 years. In that time I have played with the University of New Hampshire Wildcat Marching Band, Symphonic Band and Pep Band. After graduation I played with two fife and drum corps, the Pawtuxet Rangers Fife and Drum Corps and Middlesex County Volunteers. I played in my own three price original pop/punk band called Bubblegum Villains. We traveled the state and recorded a six track EP. In 2011 I joined the Rhode Island Highlanders Pipe Band. I compete as a soloist at the Grade III level. I compete with the Grade IV Band and am the Drum Srgt and Drum Instructor for the Grade V.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience started in college. I was one of the music teachers at Arts For Youth summer camp. It was at AFY that I got my first start to teach children music. I enjoyed it so much I began to pursue other avenues of teaching music. I worked with after school programs in New Hampshire and Rhode Island and developed music programs for 5-12 year olds. After college I took on private students. In 2015 I was named the Rhode Island Highlanders Pipe Band Grade V Drum Srgt. I teach drummers of all ages, 12-82, the music for competition.
METHODS USED
I like to create my own lesson plans based on my students wants and needs. I ask the student what their goals are and work to achievement in a fun but challenging way. With my diverse background in percussion I can teach drum set, marching or concert percussion, highland style drumming, auxiliary percussion and mallet percussion. I can work out of books for entry level band students. I can also solely focus on drum set. I like teaching something new to my students every week if possible. Every student I teach gets personal attention, in-depth critique and encouragement.
LESSON STYLE
I like to challenge my students. The trick is to push the student to the edge of the cliff without pushing them off the cliff. Every student is different and requires a different approach to learning music. I can teach students who are visual learners, auditory learners and music theory. There's no one way to teach music and my goal is to teach the student however best they learn. I also like to use videos, pictures and mirrors so the student can see and hear themselves play. Sometimes it only takes a different POV to make a difference.
