I am a vibrant forward thinking music teacher with a lot to offer a young musician. For the past twenty years music has been the center of my life. My experiences include local and international performances. In my experiences I have also had the chance to perform at famous concert halls such as Symphony Space, Avery Fischer Hall and Carnegie Hall. Currently I am a full time music instructor in public school and do my best to pass on my passion of music to my students!
Because I play I have been able to go places I didn’t think I’d see!
My teaching experiences go back at least 15 years. I started when I was in college and have never stopped teaching. In my lessons I focus on the whole child. Together we find out where their strengths lie and capitalize on those strengths. Music is supposed to be fun and that is one of my goals is to keep it fun and exciting for the student. I find it is best to expose the student to all types of music new and old and everything from classical to hip hop. My students have been as young as 5 or 6 years old and as old as 65 so there is no age limit and more importanly no limit to what we can learn together!!
For beginning students I start with an Alfred's beginning drum method to help with reading. We also start on the basic understanding of musical concepts such as tempo, dynamics and so on. While reading is important I do also include learning by wrote or by ear. A good ear is just as important as good reading skills for the complete musician. I always include music that the student is interested in to keep the lessons fun and engaging!
I always encourage students to play along with their favorite songs as well and listen and try to imitate why they are doing musically on the recording.
I love seeing and hearing my students get something and play it well. It is more rewarding than any amount of money. I encourage my students to play and perform as much as possible even if it is just in their own home. I keep the lessons well paces but I am not afraid to go off in a different direction if it suits the student. Music should be inspiring and should leave the student always wanting to learn more. With dedication, steady practice and a little emotion music can take you places you’ve never been.
My 7 year old is making good progress and looks forward to her piano lesson with Robert.
