I'm a passionate and motivated instructor who loves working with students and sharing my love of music. In 2018, I graduated from Berklee College Of Music with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Production and Engineering. Since graduating I have lived in both Nashville and Los Angeles and have played with a multitude of artists across several genres from rock to pop to country both in studio and on stage! In addition to playing music with other artists, I am also the main songwriter and founding member of my own band, Deer Pilot.
As a professional performing and recording musician, I have been honing my craft for over 18 years. I have been teaching guitar professionally for three years both privately and on staff as an instructor at School Of Rock in Venice, CA. My students range in age from 7 years old through to people in their 50s. With experience teaching a multitude of styles and techniques in both one on one and in larger group contexts, I have a great way of communicating things to people with different styles of learning. Because my skillset ranges from beginner to advanced,I am able to tailor lessons to each individual student!
I first like to learn a bit about each student and what their goals are on the instrument. Knowing whether or not someone as musical career goals vs. just being able to have fun playing is important! For beginners I general start with a bit of the basics - how the guitar works and how to start fretting notes and making some noise, and then begin moving towards easier or simplified versions of popular songs. I think that having a good frame of reference for what something is supposed to sound like makes being able to learn to play it a bit easier - no guessing! As progress is made we continue to learn more technique and theory, but always contextualizing with real word musical examples. I find that this not only helps the material stick, but also makes practicing much more engaging and fun!
My biggest goal in any lesson is that my students are engaged and having fun! I chose songs based on the taste and goals of each student I teach, and make sure to go over different technique and musical devices found in different songs. Initially when working with new students I like to begin with learning to play some songs and developing some basic fundamental skills, and then circling back and going back over any theory. As lessons progress and students become more advance I generally flip this style around and lead with theory so that I can explain harder concepts in greater detail and then further contextualize with songs to lock the information in!
