Having been a performer for many years, I realized at one point that my experience and skills could be of use to people who themselves were interested in developing their own passion for music... And so, shortly after my graduate studies, I began teaching ...There is nothing as exciting or rewarding as focusing one's personal passion and using that energy to awaken in another person their own passion for the interest which you share... Getting my Masters helped me hone my pedagogical skills in a way that i could more effectively translate my performing skills into actually teachable lessons....
This convergence of interest, energy. knowledge, and technique has helped shape me to become the motivated and effective instructor who has so enjoyed teaching over these past 25 years...
Since my graduate degree days 25 years ago , I have been steadily teaching both as a private instructor, and in classroom situations...
I'll confess that, while group lessons do foster an energy that can be exciting, the reality of dividing my teaching attention between multiple students is not quite as exciting at putting ALL my effort and attention int one private student!
As a choir director, I not only have the opportunity to teach "voice," but "musicality," and I find that to be an highly satisfying experience!
I firmly believe that, as the Latin derivation of the word "Educate" would demonstrate, the key to teaching is NOT in the pouring of information into a student, but in the "Drawing Out" (E Ducere) of the student's interest and instincts... While lesson plans are very helpful as tools, I prefer to PERSONALIZE my instruction by first assessing the innate desires of the student and their initial acumen--and THEN devising a plan that COMBINES what THEY want with what i know as an educator will lead them to THEIR goals...
My teaching style flows from my teaching philosophy: Whole-heatedly meet a student where they are, and THEN, respectfully lead them to where you as the educator know that they need to go...Establishing a true RELATIONSHIP with a student, where they know that you have THEIR best interests in mind is absolutely fundamental. As in any relationship, trust and respect are essential, and establishing a firm foundation in those areas should be just as important as the academic and skill development aspects of teaching.
