2008 - finalist, United States Navy Band euphonium audition
2007 - winner, South-Central Regional Tuba-Euphonium conference mock audition
I earned Bachelor's and Master's degrees in 2008 and 2009 in Euphonium Performance and Music Education from the University of North Texas while studying with the renowned Dr. Brian Bowman. While there, I advanced to the final round of a United States Navy Band audition. From 2010-2019, I served as a band director in three different school districts in Texas; now I teach private lessons full-time in the North Dallas area. I love nothing more than opening students' eyes to the riches and depth of musicianship.
I began teaching private lessons part-time during my undergraduate, and I have worked full-time in education, either as a band director or private lesson teacher, for the past 14 years. As a Bachelor's and Master's student, I honed my musicianship and technique to an incredible degree; as a band director, I learned a great deal about how to connect with and break concepts down for young students. Throughout both periods, my students have found success, with several placing first or second chair in All-Region auditions and earning Outstanding Soloist in solo contests.
I know that most of my young students are in their school's band program, so I use a combination of whatever method books they use there plus my own supplemental materials I have found to be effective over years of teaching. If students are preparing for events like All-Region/All-District auditions or a Solo Festival, I spend plenty of time helping them with that. For other students, I have several books of progressive etudes, includes Bordner's Books of Practical Studies and Sparke's Skilful Studies. Throughout, I focus on a well-rounded and solid fundamental base, again with a combination of tried-and-true methods and my own supplemental materials.
My approach is methodical and step-by-step. I believe each learning step builds on the last, and that each new skill acquired "unlocks" new abilities and new music that can be played. At core, everything comes down to the twin pillars of fundamentals (including breathing, embouchure, tone, articulation, and range) and music reading, including rhythm and sightreading. In my lessons, I am always warm and encouraging and celebrate success, yet I always direct students' attention beyond what they have just accomplished to the next goal to be achieved.
I've had Mr Robert M as a private lesson teacher throughout all of high school, and I am now a senior. He is an excellent teacher and has helped me tremendously with my all-region etudes, difficult euphonium solos and concert music.
Robert has been my son’s private lesson teacher for over 3 years. In that time my son has gone from not knowing how to make a (good) sound on the Euphonium, to earning a spot in our Region’s top band both years that he has auditioned. Rob is patient but yet challenges my son and it shows in the results. I highly recommend him!
Mr. Robert M was my son's private lesson teacher all throughout his high school years. He was always very professional, communicative, encouraging, and supportive. My son enjoyed his weekly lessons, and we all found Mr. Robert M's work with him to be of substantial value. I highly recommend Mr. Robert M for private instrument lessons. We have been extremely pleased!
My son had Robert as his private lessons teacher for two years in middle school, and he helped him tremendously throughout the all-region auditions, solo contests, and his music in general. I would highly recommend Robert because he knows how to bring out the best in each student by identifying what they need and teaching them accordingly, while also making sure that they maintain the best sound possible. I am confident anyone who choose him as their private lesson teacher will improve exponentially as a musician.
