Overview:
I'm a patient and caring individual who believes in giving back to the community because the community has given me so much. I enjoy playing and teaching music more than anything. I've had the opportunity of learning from many great teachers in the state of North Carolina, and have had the privilege of being a part of groups such as the ECU Wind Ensemble, ECU Marching Pirates, ECU Trumpet Ensemble and several other quality groups.
EXPERIENCE
I've been teaching trumpet since I was a freshman in High School. My mother is a band director for Selma Middle School and frequently asks me to tutor students or conduct a group session. After High School, many private teaching opportunities opened up for me, including Hope Middle School, Red Wood Middle School, Clinton Middle School, as well as brass tech for Topsail High School and Clinton High School. I currently am under contract with Archer's Lodge High School as a marching band tech leading high brass and drill instruction as well as a few private lessons. Altogether, I estimate my teaching experience to be roughly 20+ private students, several hundred students in group sessions all over about 9 years.
METHODS USED
My instruction follows a broad method of teaching technique as well as musicality. I use method books such as Arbans, Clarke, Frink, Schlossberg, Concone, as well as several etude books like the Voxman series, Charlier, and others. Depending on the student's knowledge, I can teach theory concepts so the student can better understand the broad aspects of composition and improvisation. My main focuses are: rhythm, tone, playing technique, history, range, musicality with a broad library of different approaches to teaching through applied lessons.
LESSON STYLE
I understand how hard it is to learn a new instrument. Music is just like a language - because it is one! My approach to learning music is, like learning a new language, immersion in the basics and linking concepts from playing to listening. Depending on what the student wants to learn, I am willing to take great lengths in making sure the student is enjoying the experience as well as learning the importance of music.
