Bachelor Degree: Eastern Michigan University
I am a newly graduated musician who is eager and motivated to pass on my knowledge and experience to others! My experience with music has extended back 17 years, beginning at the age of six. For the first twelve years, I was mentored under the tutelage of Janet Houston. I also have a combined 14 years of orchestral performance experience, beginning with the Dearborn Youth Symphony which lasted ten years. After that my experience increased further by spending four years performing with the Eastern Michigan University Symphony Orchestra. This experience has all culminated in my graduation in 2019 and receiving my Bachelor of Art's in music.
My teaching experience has extended towards friends, family and fellow students over the years. Though this will be my first time teaching professionally, the experience I've gained by performing with various musicians and learning under various mentors has given me plenty of knowledge to share with others! As I am newly graduated, I have a fresh perspective of the experience of being a music student and all the achievements and obstacles that have come with it. My educational history has been broad, having learned methods both new and old, I can use tools and methods from each to create an effective teaching environment.
Beginning violin is important. I use Hal Leonard's Essential Elements to help teach the functionality and basic building blocks of playing the violin. Moving forward, the best introduction into violin music itself is the Suzuki Violin School volume set. Each book helps students through various levels during their beginner phase. These pieces not only serve as educational material but also as solo repertoire for beginners in recitals. As students learn these methods, I start to tailor lessons suitable for them, allowing them to choose what they desire to play, or something that they would be eager or excited to play. The most important thing is to keep a student engaged, passionate and desiring to learn music.
Though I will use basic materials to give students the knowledge necessary to begin, I believe it is important to allow students to play things themselves, to make mistakes because that is how we learn. My goal is to teach people music not to show them, meaning I provide the framework for a student's improvement so the student themselves can finish building the way they want to. Every student learns differently and I can effectively adapt to different paces at which students learn. supporting and acknowledging a student's progress is key. A student will have no desire to learn if they no longer have the motivation to learn.
