2011-2015 - Performed with the U.S. Navy's Seventh Fleet Band throughout Southeast Asia; Perform recitals regularly
Overview:
I'm a passionate clarinetist and conductor who strongly believes in the power to change the world. As a former Navy musician, I traveled throughout Southeast Asia, performing for everything and everyone--from the general public to exclusive VIP events. My parents had always wondered if buying my clarinet in 5th grade was a good investment--and I can say without a doubt that it was. I understand what music can do--and why music education is so important. It helps connect us in a way that nothing else can and brings joy to children and adults everywhere.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience goes back to college when I first started offering lessons. During my time with the Navy, I would lead masterclasses for students in Singapore and Australia. During my time with the Army National Guard, I have regularly worked with high school students to help them prepare for All-State auditions. I love teaching and working to bring the best out of my students. Being a student is difficult. In order to motivate them, I require listening to professional musicians and structured "goofing" around, on top of the usual exercises and practice time. Students often learn more when they have the opportunity to find what they like and to do what they have always wanted to try.
METHODS USED
I tailor my methods to the individual student. Younger students have typically needed assistance in their beginning band repertoire, while older students are eager to branch off and do solos and chamber ensembles. I help them select the repertoire that is best for them--but ultimately allow them to make the choice. Every lesson, I incorporate duets. Nothing improves students like playing with someone else. I also incorporate recordings and drones into lessons. All of these force the student to make adjustments themselves, resulting in the most efficient improvement possible.
LESSON STYLE
My philosophy is defined by the need for the student to be actively engaged in what they are doing. This means that I keep things moving during lessons. Within a broader structure, the student chooses what they want to work on. For all ages, I work to create a safe environment by actively encouraging mistakes. At all times, students must feel safe enough to fail. In many instances, a student's "mistake" would actually be correct in another situation. For instance, squeaking on a clarinet is actually an uncontrolled high note. Consequently, I believe structured exploration, failure, and fun are the best ways to improve on an instrument or conducting.
