Overview:
I have been playing guitar for over 20 years, with much of that time spent giving private instruction to students of all ages. Having first started playing other instruments as a child, my love of music really took off when I began playing the guitar in my teen years. I have since performed in many different venues and also enjoy playing in a local church. My playing styles vary between pop, rock, alternative, blues, christian and folk music. Along with instruction on guitar and bass I also teach harmonica, which is my newest musical endeavor and a strong passion of mine. I give lessons in student's homes in the Hampton Roads area and also online via Skype anywhere they may reside. I am a passionate musician who loves spreading the joy of music to anyone with the desire to learn. It's never to late to start learning an instrument.
EXPERIENCE
Teaching is a very fulfilling experience as it constantly requires you to examine your own playing and methods so that you can share your knowledge with people. I first discovered how rewarding it was when I started giving lessons after about 5 years of playing guitar. It made me a better guitar player and musician, and also helped me connect with people I never would have in a unique and exciting way. Teaching someone reinforces the skills and information that I've required over years of being a musician and it's so fun and rewarding to see my students blossom into the players they want to become.
METHODS USED
My methodologies for teaching will vary based on different factors such as age and level of musical knowledge. The number one thing I try and do for my students is make sure they have FUN and ENJOY the process of learning. I do like to use established books that focus on the fundamentals of music such as the Hal Leonard Guitar Method Books. Literature like that is very informative, but also a bit clinical at times, so I always like to find out what my students want to play and tailor lessons towards their specific goals. One of my favorite things to do is discover what bands and style of music a student likes so I can start teaching them appropriate songs for their skill level from those artists.
LESSON STYLE
Encouragement is one of the most important things for learning an instrument. I've heard from many students how much easier it is for them to take private lessons instead of being on display in front of a group. It can be disheartening to hear other players in a class setting who can play more proficiently than you. Private lessons offer exactly what it states: privacy. I want my students to be comfortable and safe and not feel judged on their journey of learning. It's important to find out where they want to be as a musician and focus on lessons getting them to that point by giving realistic goals and supporting them on their path. I am here to help my students be the musician they want to be.
