I'm an energetic and encouraging instructor who loves to foster a love of music in my students and help them reach their goals. I graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in trombone performance from the Hartt School of Music, Theater, and Dance in 2018 and I am currently working on a masters degree at the Hartt School. I started touring with Tim Zimmerman and the King's Brass in May 2018 and have performed more than 100 concerts in over 25 states with them. I have also played several concerts with the Hartt 20/20 brass quintet in the Hartford area, as well as the Niagara Falls, NY area on an educational tour.
I began teaching private lessons four years ago, and have always desired to teach more students and share my love of music with them. It is important to me to know what my students' goals are so that I can tailor my instruction to meet their needs. I do not believe in a "one size fits all" approach to teaching, as every student is unique. I am on faculty at Wesleyan University, where I teach trombone lessons and play with their orchestra on occasion. I love guiding my students to be able to teach themselves and develop a curiosity about music and their instrument.
For students in a beginning band program, I will use whatever method book they are currently using. For students not in a band program I like to use the Rubank Method. To build upon those method books, I like using the Arban book and the Cimera phrasing studies. Because sight reading and ensemble playing are very important to my teaching style, every lesson will begin with a couple duets. It is my goal to help young students build the skills needed to master their band music without my help on it every week. I create my own exercises and supplementary materials tailored to each student as is needed.
I love to instill a love and curiosity of the trombone, music, and life in my students. I give my students listening assignments every week in addition to their practice assignments so that they may experience all of the various idioms the trombone is used in. My favorite moments in teaching are those when the student is able to answer their own questions and use the concepts they've learned to reach their own solutions. My goal is to teach my students to the point where they don't need me anymore!
