I have played the piano since childhood and specialize in the classical repertoire, as I believe it offers the most comprehensive method of attaining instrumental mastery. However, I will not hesitate to use any material that interests a student, in any genre, provided sheet music is available. I can play jazz and improvise fluently and have also played in blues bands, but prefer to devote myself to classical music. I play the guitar at an advanced level and for the last seven years have written about a great variety of Western music for Fanfare Magazine, contributing full length interviews, often with famous musicians, and CD and DVD reviews. I initially covered Indian film music for Fanfare and therefore have sufficiently eclectic taste to enjoy music from other parts of the world.
I am a very experienced piano teacher, having taught the instrument for many years to students as young as four. Currently, I do not accept students under the age of ten, except in exceptional circumstances. While I enjoy helping beginners learn their way around the piano, I am also qualified to teach advanced students and can be of particular assistance to those who wish to reach the highest level.
I follow no particular method, although I try to inculcate a fluid technique. I have been greatly influenced by Gyorgy Sandor's ideas (author of On PIano Playing and a former teacher at the Juilliard School), but have evolved my own approach. I have found that a student's motivation and commitment are more important than the methods used. Consequently, I modify my "curriculum" to suit their individual personalities and talents.
As a teacher, I am personable, relaxed, but also methodical and detailed. I allow students to progress at their own pace. However, those hoping to pursue a serious musical education of necessity must follow a more intense discipline, which I am happy to provide.
