Hi, my name is Robert G., and I'm a passionate and motivated instructor who loves working with students and sharing my love of music. I began my musical career and journey at the age of 8 years old. The first instrument I began to study and learned the Acoustic Guitar. Then, at the age of 10 years old, I began to study and learned how to play the Bb Trumpet. And then, when I was in High School, I began to study and learned how to play Electric Bass and Acoustic Double Bass as a Band Member of both my local church, and part of my High School Jazz Band. In 2015, I graduated from Hartnell College with an Associate of Arts degree in Music Performance. Performing all over the Central Coast of California has been one of the greatest experiences of my life as a musician. I've had the opportunity to play both at the Henry Mello Center for Performing Arts in Watsonville, CA, and also at Sherwood Hall in Salinas, CA. I also toured Northern California with a Christian Rock Band in my young adult musical career. As well as several performances, during my tenure, as the principal Bassist with the Hartnell College Orchestra.
My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons part-time 5 years ago, and have been consistently teaching students online for the last 3 years. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. I've also found that a combination of classical and modern music can go a long way in helping students enjoy Guitar, Electric Bass, and Bb Trumpet and can motivate them to practice and continue to learn. If a student isn't having fun in their lessons, then I'm not doing my job! My students are encouraged to enter competitions and recitals, as well as work on composing their original material, so they can feel good about their accomplishments and stay motivated to learn. I'm always looking to bring on new students! Looking forward to this exciting opportunity!
For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. After their first solo piece, there will be room for expansion into different genres of music. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and is prepared to study, and I will guide them in my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level.
Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. It’s in the best interest of the student that he or she have the self-desire to want to improve on their instrument. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a student’s desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs…
