Overview:
I have been teaching musical arts for quite some time now and really enjoy teaching and seeing my students grow in skill and confidence. Before teaching private lessons and then in a local music school, I was in a working Rock and Roll band, playing mostly original songs. I have played from Pawtucket, Rhode island down to the Outer banks in North Carolina. Of course, we played the majority of our shows in Philadelphia. Original music has also been used in BMX videos. I am self taught however, being taught how to teach really gives me an advantage.
EXPERIENCE
I have found the last few years very rewarding as students become musicians. Since my first student I taught in 2004, through the days I taught at a music school, up right on to the present moment, I love passing the music onward as it was passed to me. Being a multi generational musician, it's important to me to teach this great artform and pass it down through generations. I also like to let my students know that "music lasts a lifetime." Because, if my students practice the material five days a week, for a minimum of 30 minutes, their skills as well as confidence will grow.
METHODS USED
For beginners I like to use books and a few easy songs to get the student started. As skill level grows, I try to encourage students to form their own chord progressions as well as using songs that I choose or a song the students chooses that will encourage them to play and learn more songs on their own. I also encourage intermediate level students to explore their imaginations and create their own songs. At this level, I'd expect my students to be able to compose their own songs or songs written by others and have an understanding of song structure. Example Intro, chorus, verse, bridge, solos, etc. Also, I encourage parents to take in account the size of their child and the instrument. If you have a small child, I'd recommend a child size instrument. This can make a huge difference.
LESSON STYLE
I'm a very laid back teacher and I do my absolute best in making my students feel comfortable and also have fun while in the process of learning the art of music. I will give the students the tools they need to learn their instrument or instruments. I expect them to use the tools that were taught and practice at least thirty minutes per day and at least five days per week. Practice is important because each lesson builds off the previous lesson. If my students follow instructions well it should be an easy process that allows the student to positively reinforce themselves.
