Hi! My name is Robert, and I am very excited to have the opportunity to work with some hopeful and aspiring young musicians in the Denver area!!!! I am very passionate about music, which is likely why I was never able to just stick to one instrument when I was in band in high school. My principal instrument is trumpet, but I play all woodwind, brass, and percussive instruments, and I sing. I attended school at Valley Head High School in Valley Head, Alabama and attended college at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. I have performed all over the country, and my musical arrangements, compositions, and marching drill design have been performed all over the world. Music has been my life for almost 20 years, and I wouldn't trade any of my experiences in performance for anything in this world! I have since taught at Cedar Bluff High School and Valley Head High School, working with band and choir students. I have also taught private lessons on various instruments and in voice since 2008. I have had my students make All-State Honor Band/All-State Choir, I have had students get college scholarships and many have been accepted into colleges as music majors, I have had students nominated for the All-American Army Marching Band, and have even had students perform solo recitals in public venues. I enjoy teaching and especially enjoy teaching music more than anything.
My teaching experience began in 2008, when I began teaching private lessons on various instruments, on voice, and on conducting. I later went on to teach band and choir at Cedar Bluff High School in 2011. After this, I volunteered as the band director at Valley Head High School in 2014. I have enjoyed every moment of teaching music and have taken so much from the experiences that I've had. If I was to emphasize anything about learning the art, it would be the understanding of interpretation and how to make any music into something that is uniquely yours. I am looking for students of all ages, and am excited to bring the world of music a little bit closer to any student whose presence for which I may be graced. I work diligently to maintain that my students always feel confident in everything they do musically and understand the thrill of taking part in something so wonderful and fulfilling.
When taking on beginner students, I typically use a blend of method books and novice musical pieces to begin to build musicianship. With intermediate musicians, I tend to seek out anything of interet to the student while incorporating harder repertoire to strengthen musicianship and to continue to peek interest in music. With adult musicians, I let them guide me to their area of interest, and I capitalize on that to guide them to better musicianship, no matter what their skill level may be.
I like to understand a student on a musical level, thus letting their ability level and their drive push me in the direction most useful for the student's success. I encourage them by setting specified goals and show them how to attain them while guiding them through any necessary musical concepts they may meet along the way. I gain from my students' accomplishments a sense of pride, which makes me work just as hard for my students as they do for me. I love finding ways to inspire a student to want to learn and achieve more in their area of music. Nothing is more rewarding for me than seeing my students take on something challenging and learn it with a fervor to learn and take on more musical challenges.
