Overview:
I offer private Guitar Lessons - in my studio or in your home, specializing in beginners and intermediate students. All music styles, acoustic and electric. I was inspired to learn the guitar in the 60's as a young lad. The guitar sound in those old popular songs just grabbed me and I knew I had to learn how to play. I learned to play the old fashioned way by, learning to read music. In many cases there were no options but to try to figure out what they were doing. I never had a dull moment and music became a big part of my life. The Guitarists who have influenced me the most, in no particular order: George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Mark Farner, Alvin Lee, Charlie Hargrett, Tony Iomi, The Outlaws, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Lindsey Buckingham, David Gilmour, James Hetfield; all come to mind but I'm sure there are many others.
EXPERIENCE
I have been playing guitar for over 40 years now, and have spent 6 years in guitar lessons myself. Three of those years were devoted to studying classical guitar. I have been teaching for over 12 years, and now instruction has become the main focal point of my playing. When I was 30 I decided to go back into guitar lessons and study classical guitar. This was very challanging but made me a much better player all around. Aside from my home teaching endevors, I am currently a guitar instructor at a well known guitar store in No. Va. I have been with them for 6 years and have had many very successful students. That's my gratification!
METHODS USED
With beginner students I like to start off learning to read music (it's not that hard!) I like to use the Mel Bay Method 1 book as a teaching tool. This book has two strong points, it explains the fundamentals of music very well and is easy to understand, while starting off playing songs right away. Once we have enough of the basics down then I start working on guitar techniques and learning songs that focus on those skills. Also more music theorey is introduced. Once good playing skills are obtained then we move in the direction of the students desired songs that they want to learn. Also, at this point I start using tabulature script as songs are expected to get more difficult and technical. It really all comes together and becomes fun.
For Intermediate to advanced students I work primarily on technique and finding a style of play. The material gets much more difficult and I like to stress playing along with another guitar player.
LESSON STYLE
My approach is to work at each students individual pace, and determining what material they are ready for, and what weaknesses need to be worked on. I am a no presure teacher and am very patient with beginners.The goal is to have fun while learning. I try my best to work hard when we are together, and to ensure that you completely understand the material that we covered. I rely on the student to practice in between sessions. I think that is critical to get the most out of it. I also provide all of the teaching materials necessary and increase the difficulty incrementally as the student progresses. The increase in difficulty is both my reward as well as yours. All of my accomplished students take pride in their advancment and hunger for more. Once again-I put a lot of emphasis on your pace. With more advanced students I work primarrily with more difficult techniques, and a deeper understanding of music structure. Another big part for intermediate to advanced students is to work on playing songs with another person playing a different guitar part. And as always the focus in on developing your style of play.
