Master’s Degree in Education from Azusa Pacific University in Azusa, CA
Minor in Music with an emphasis in performance from the University of California, Santa Barbara.
Overview:
I have been a musician almost my whole life, starting out as a singer in a children's church choir when I was five. I started playing cello in the fourth grade through the public school system in California. I am classically trained, but I love all different styles of music. One of my strengths as a string player is improvisation. I have played with many different pop, rock, and folk bands over the years and that's the kind of music I enjoy playing the most. I teach from age 8 up and while I love teaching all ages, I especially love teaching adult beginners. My personal philosophy is that it's never too late to learn! I currently work as a full-time Academic Librarian, and teach music on nights and weekends.
EXPERIENCE
I have played cello for over 30 years. I've been teaching on and off since I graduated college, and consistently for the last ten years. I have performed and recorded with a variety of different groups in Southern California and Texas including the Claremont Symphony Orchestra in Claremont, California, the Point Loma Nazarene University Orchestra in San Diego, California, the Sinfonietta of Fort Worth in Texas, various independent solo artists and alternative bands. I am currently the praise team leader for a church in Fort Worth, where I sing and play guitar.
METHODS USED
For all my cello students, I start with 170 Foundation Studies and a modified Suzuki Method (Cello). Once my students reach Suzuki book 4, then they can start playing Bach Suites, and other intermediate repertoir. The Bach Suites, however, are what most of my cello students are interested in learning. For piano students, I use the Bastien piano series by Neil Kjos. I want my students to be interested and engaged, and coach them through basics while also trying to find pieces or genres they want to play.
LESSON STYLE
I am a positive and encouraging instructor, and emphasize proper technique, music theory, and fundamentals through a variety of musical styles ranging from classical to popular music. My students are all ages (I once had a student start at the age of 70!) and come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. I work with students to help them balance a practice schedule with the rest of their lives. I consider myself to be a coach and facilitator and work with my students to set realistic, achievable, but challenging goals. You are never too old to start learning something new.
