2001-2005, Indiana State University Presidents Scholar and Honors Recital participant
I am a passionate music educator who has spent years both in the classroom and private studio setting. I love teaching and sharing music with my students, and I especially enjoy seeing my students grow and take pride in their work. I grew up taking piano lessons and always knew that I wanted to teach piano as an adult. However, when I studied music in college, I also fell in love with vocal music teaching. My specialty is adolescent voice, as I taught middle school choir for over 10 years and enjoy helping students learn how to sing through their changing, growing voices.
I have extensive teaching experience in both public and private institutions as well as private studios. In my years of teaching, I have had the privilege of working with students of all ages - preschool through adult - and I enjoy the challenge of tailoring lessons to meet students where they are. I find that consistency, high expectations, and respect are the key to helping my students succeed. But most importantly, I want my students to know that I care about them! It is such a privilege we have as music teachers, to share in the budding love of music of our students.
I typically use the Faber method books for my piano students, as I feel they are pedagogically sound and have supplemental material to support both beginner and intermediate levels. For those students who are more advanced, I tend to select classical repertoire that matches or challenges individual techniques and abilities. My voice students spend their lessons working on vocalises and sight singing, and then we work on repertoire ranging from folk songs, art songs, and musical theater. Of course, with all of my students, I encourage them to choose music that inspires them artistically and engages their interest. I want my students to look forward to their time with their instrument and for their practice to be a joy!
I enjoy setting goals with my students that are attainable and allow them to feel successful in their music study. I also want my students to feel that our lesson time together is a safe place to explore their musical growth, and I feel that this is only acheieved when students know that their teacher cares for them. Therefore, I also try to make lessons fun and lighthearted. We play games, talk about personal interests, and make connections between music and the world around us. In learning more about my students, I am able to tailor my instruction to their personal interests and abilities.
