Aloha! My name is Ron and I am offering Beginner-Intermediate level guitar lessons for students of all ages.
I have over a decade of teaching experience, in the United States and abroad, with an emphasis on personalized and custom-tailored lessons. My approach is to have students learn by playing songs and styles that THEY choose! Every session is uniquely built for each student based on their specific goals and desires, to make sure they are learning exactly what they want and need.
My philosophy: If you're not having fun, you won't stick with it! (BONUS FACT: I am also a "lap-tapping" fingerstyle guitarist. If you haven't heard of that, check out "Airtap! - Erik Mongrain" on YouTube... I can teach you that too!)
I have been teaching guitar almost for as long as I've been playing. I'm a self-taught musician from the age of 15; at 16 I was helping my close friends learn; and by 17 I was already taking on students. Since then, I've had over a decade of experience and dozens of students who I've helped usher in to the wonderful world of music. I have also worked as a teaching assistant and private tutor in academia, and have taught (quite literally) hundreds of students, from kindergarten to college. While the subjects and content differed every time, the process I took was always the same: FOCUS ON THE STUDENT. Each person is different, and each person has a unique way of maximizing their learning process. My years of teaching have only reinforced this point, and I make sure everything I teach – from music to macroeconomics – always puts the student at the center!
I start with each new student by getting to know what music styles they like, what songs they want to learn, what their goals are. I work with the students to select specific songs they want to learn NOW – and then I build my entire lesson plan and approach around those. Rather than start them off with drills and exercises, we immediately begin learning content that the students actually care about. Not only does this make the process much more enjoyable (naturally) – but it also makes them progress RIDICULOUSLY fast! The reason is simple: people practice more consistently when it's something they care about. And practice makes perfect. ;)
As I may have mentioned once or twice... Students are at the heart of my teaching process. Everyone has their own goals, their own tastes, their own learning process, their own challenges. If a teacher does not tailor his/her approach to the student in front of them, then an opportunity is being missed. Students should feel involved and invested in the process, and feel that it is serving them. I always explain not only WHAT the students are learning, but also WHY they are learning it. When students are brought into the learning/teaching process (instead of treated as simple subjects of it) the experience is completely different. And the results speak for themselves. :)
