My personal achievement is that I can play the drums by hear and share that with others.
I am 57 years old with a passion for drumming for God. I currently listen to christian radio learning all the latest songs I like to play on the drums. I like people and have spent the last 30+ years working for income to try to help them what ever their problems. I feel like now I desire to teach students how to play the drums. I've always wanted to do this but just never got around to it before. My goal is to pass on my knowledge on the drumset to others. I think I can do a great job!
I started playing the drums when I was 6 years old. I just played with a pair of sticks on a chair listening to my favorite records. I found I had a gift for hearing music and playing the drums without any training. I got my first drum kit in grade school and eventually I was able to obtain a better kit which lead to me starting to play for compensation in local bands in the 12th grade. I just kept at it and I continued to get better and better. I didn't let it go to my head. All the other musicians told me I was their best drummer ever.
Today a student has many practice options to learn on. The equipment is so much better. There are so maany different types of practice pads. They now are easier to play on and have better rebound like a real drumhead on a snare for instance. There is also a company named Promark which makes Tubz which are plastic tubes that can be played on any surface. First I would attempt to find out what level the student is at to determine how to best start instruction. Practice, practice, practice is my motto.
I would teach students to play by ear since that is what I know. I believe in showing somebody how to make that beat is best. Once you get that down, then I can show the student something a little harder. It is best to start out very simple because someone just learning has to develop confidence to move on to something else. A student will give up if it is not reinforcing. A student needs constant praise and encouragement. Lets face it, the drums could be the hardest instrument to learn how to play. Expect to suffer to be a master!
