Bachelor Degree: Rollins College
I’m a working pianist, educator, music director, and accompanist. My greatest passion however is teaching, and I try to weave that into every part of my musical life and work. I graduated in the spring of 2022 with my bachelors in music from Rollins College in Winter Park Florida, studying under Dr. Gloria Cook. My favorite work to do aside from teaching is music directing musicals. I love to travel the state to play in and lead a pit of musicians and to bring a show to life through the thing I do best.
I have been teaching piano since High School and have learned a lot since then; both in my personal studies and from my many students. Each student teaches me a new perspective on music and piano, inspiring me to further refine my craft as a teacher and player. My goal is not to make professional musicians out of my students, but rather to give them a skill they can carry and enjoy in a healthy way for the rest of their life. I hope to inspire each of them as much as they inspire me in my work.
I was trained in the Leschetizky and Schnabel methods, so those are the primary influences of my technical approach. As for method books for young students, it depends on their strengths and needs which I assess in the first lesson. From that assessment, I assign a methods book that best fits them. If none of them are satisfactory, I have a library of my own written exercises and methods that I provide for free. I try to teach as much theory as possible and stress the importance of general knowledge as well as sight reading and ear training. I believe in the necessity of singing in music, because if we can sing it, we can realize it on the piano.
I make sure to develop personalized plans for each student to make sure they have a solid base in theory as well as a total body approach to the piano. Aside from that it is truly up to the student what we do. For instance, if they are interested in a certain pop album, we’ll take the album apart, learn it by ear, and write it down to make sure we understand it. If they are interested in classical music, as that is my primary area of personal expertise, I will take them down one of many tracks that best suits their interests. If they are interested in musical theater, I will make sure they are equipped to accompany or music direct any production they would like. I place a large emphasis on ear training and sight reading and guide my students through those fields so that they can be successful.
