BM University of Denver
2008, University of Denver Scholarship Student
I am a versatile performer who graduated from The University of Denver in 2008 and have toured the midwest with a rock band. I taught guitar with Musika from 2009 to 2011. I look forward to teaching my students even more about the vast knowledge I have accrued both in performance and teaching. The biggest gigs I have ever played was with my band at Monona Terrace in Madison Wisconsin and with The London Symphony Chorus. I am most passionate about teaching students styles of music they may not be aware of and making them excited about learning these styles.
I have a vast and broad range of teaching experience. I taught at a private music school just outside of Denver when studied at The University of Denver. In addition, I have taught advanced levels to all ages on several different instruments (guitar, bass guitar, and double bass). I also can teach the ability to sing and play these instruments at the same time. This is certainly an attractive skill for any aspiring musician or songwriter. Moreover, I believe that the skills that I teach from touring and playing in a wide variety of settings make me a great teacher for students seeking to pursue a wide variety of avenues in the music industry.
My teaching methods involve a mix of real music, etudes, dexterity exercises, and rudimentary technical drilling. In each of these lessons I choose in one of the aforementioned areas the one I feel is the most pressing and in need of improvement. I am very strict about students using their metronomes to practice what I teach them. My view is that playing a song or drill slowly and in time with a metronome is better than playing it at the proper tempo incorrectly. My methods ensure that students follow the mantra perfect practice makes perfect.
I believe honest communication is the best foundation for teaching; it truly allows the student to know how I feel about their progress and how they feel about their experience learning a musical instrument. I balance my personal view of the student's abilities with their opinion of their abilities and progress and try to tailor what we can do together to strengthen our time together. I think that there is the idea that having the student learn what they want to learn must be balanced with considerations like ability level and progress.
