Overview:
I’ve been playing violin and viola for nearly twenty years and I love to share my passion for music with others. I’ve played in symphonies, string quartets, musicals, jazz bands, operas, and even rock shows. I have both a bachelors and a masters in music performance, but I still like making time in my life for my other interests- I love to hike, draw, and make lace! In addition to teaching and performing, I also love to compose. I use composition a lot to help create content for my students, and I encourage my students to improvise and write their own music!
EXPERIENCE
I’ve been teaching private lessons for about 6 years. Some of my favorite teaching experiences have been from my time in Tanzania, where I have been a music teacher every summer since 2016. I’ve taught students as young as 4 years old- I think it’s never to early to introduce the joys of music making to a child! Children and adult students alike, my biggest goal in lessons is to foster a life-long love of music. I love teaching both students who are “serious” about a musical future as well as those who want to play just for fun. Whatever your goals or intentions are for wanting to learn an instrument, I think it’s important to encourage students to express themselves musically.
METHODS USED
Although I do not teach Suzuki method, I do like to use the Suzuki method books as a resource for teaching younger students. The first piece my school-aged students learn will always be one that they know the tune to already: Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, for example. Once students are comfortable in holding and using the violin, I introduce a little bit of note reading at each lesson. For adult students, understanding of the instrument will come much faster, so I love getting my students to play music with which they can focus on making a beatiful sound while still learning the fundamentals.
LESSON STYLE
My biggest goal as a teacher is to help my students develop and nourish a love of music. I believe that positive reinforcement and clear, concise instruction are essential to helping students achieve success. It is vital that during each lesson students not only expand their playing abilities, but also their confidence. I want to foster an environment where students feel comfortable experimenting, asking questions, and sharing their own ideas. I aim to teach technique to students as a tool for musical expression. I emphasize the fundamentals of comfortable, natural playing posture so that each student can produce a beautiful tone with confidence and ease. I use our lessons as a safe space to learn the art of practicing, allowing students to progress individually between lessons. I teach students to listen to themselves critically - to actively reflect on what they are pleased with and what they want to improve in their playing. I enjoy hearing my students excited to comment on what they notice they've done well. Finally, my teaching reflects the individuality of each student. I tailor my approach to each lesson to fit the students' learning style, personality, and goals.

I am a non traditional (adult intermediate) student and Roselyn makes sure to tailor my lessons around what I want out of them by letting me dictate what we work on. I was curious how much value I would get out of video lessons versus in person instruction, but she's got a great eye and can see when my wrist isn't straight or my bow hand needs adjustment.

Our teacher is the best. She was super helpful and nice. I would definitely recommend her to anyone. My daughter needed to play a solo in front of the whole school with her brother and did a excellent job only due to Roselyn. She is also very accommodating which is rare in such a qualified teacher.
