2019- Minnesota NATS Division 11B First Place Winner
I am a graduate student in Vocal Performance at LSU who is excited to start a vocal studio in my new city of Baton Rouge. A lifelong musician, I have been singing for as long as I can remember. I have been studying voice for over 10 years, and have had the honor of singing in halls across the United States and Europe. I am a classically trained singer with a bachelors degree in Vocal Performance from the University of Minnesota, but my first love was musical theater. I think singing is one of the greatest joys of life, and I cannot wait to help you on your musical journey.
I have been teaching students privately for three years. I took on my first student during my junior year of college, and during those lessons I discovered my love of teaching. I was trained in Vocal Pedagogy by Jean Del Santo, a renowned pedagogue and professor at the University of Minnesota. As a teacher, I have helped students prepare for auditions, recitals, and major performances. I have also worked with students who are simply excited to learn more about the voice. My experiences in choirs have also helped me teach students who prefer group music making over solo performances. I am experienced in teaching all ages, but my specialty lies with teenage students and young adults.
I believe that learning is incredibly individualized. Each student will have specific goals and ways of understanding instruction. Because of this, I believe that teaching should be just as individualized. I aim to teach each student in what ever way will best support them in their learning, rather than forcing all students to learn in one uniform way. I also believe in a holistic method of teaching, meaning we will focus on how singing feels in the entire body, rather than only focusing on the neck up. If interested, I also will guide beginning students through basic piano skills, as it is vital to have some understanding of the piano if one wants to learn voice. Lessons will always start with vocal warm ups, followed by vocal exercises meant to build upon our lesson goals, and finally singing through repertoire.
As a teacher, my main goal is to distill a love of singing and music into my students. Because of this goal, I always aim to keep lessons fun and engaging. I am a very energetic and enthusiastic teacher, so students can expect to do a lot of smiling and laughing in my studio. We will, however, still take our music making very seriously. Our fun will not stop us from achieving our goals. I also am always looking for feedback from my students about what they feel is working about our lessons and what isn't. It is vitally important to me that students find our lessons rewarding, rather than taxing.
