Overview:
I am a very passionate and versatile artist. I am constantly finding ways to improve as a performer, writer, and overall human being. I have played saxophone since I was in third grade, and my commitment to my art helped me pay and achieve 2 degrees from 2 respectively prestigious places. As a saxophonist, I am very thorough at both interpreting scores and "learning by ear". I even have colleagues who've witnessed me learn entire movements to a piece by ear. As such, I am able to do similar feats with transcribing music onto sheet music, regardless of the instrument, genre, technical difficulty, etc. As an overall person, I am very well-rounded and approachable. I have a very eclectic taste in music, studio art, and film. Being of the experience, I have an especial inclination toward music of the West African diaspora. Aside from art, I find creativity with gardening, nature, and photography.
EXPERIENCE
I play a wide range of genres. During my years at Mercer, I regularly performed jazz, R&B, and Gospel music throughout the state of Georgia. In the winter of 2015, I even performed with The Temptations. During my four years there, I also performed several sub-genres of Classical Music from Sonatas and avant garde to even transcriptions of Bach Cello Suites. During my time in Chicago at DePaul, I regularly did jam session and collaborations with different ensembles there. In the classical sphere, majority of my performances consisted of Sax Quartet and Avant Garde. I even had the pleasure of performing genres that were totally unfamiliar such as Afro Beat and even Bollywood Pop. Currently, I am laying foundation in my new residence of Tampa Bay. The Florida music scene is just as diverse and multifaceted as the people who live there. The most frequented genres for me are R&B, Salsa, and Reggaeton.
METHODS USED
My methods are tailored to the individual student. I focus on proper breathing, posture, and instrument placement in the early part of my lessons. Then, I focus on scales and harmonies. The majority of my lessons consist of Technical Exercises, and I choose pieces/songs based on the students natural inclinations. My method books include: Ferling 48 Etudes Bach Cello Suites (Transcribed for sax by Trent Kynaston) Trent Kynaston Scale Studies Improvisation for Saxophone (Oliver Nelson) The Jazz Real Book
LESSON STYLE
The single commonality among all my students is maintaining a fun atmosphere in the midst of productivity. As artist, we should never take ourselves too seriously. It's counterproductive and creates tension both physically and socially.We strive to captivate audiences. Why not do the same in rehearsal? There's no point in being profound if you're not relatable. I always push my students to be true to how the writer wrote the piece. That being said, the music needs to always have a personality just like the people who listen or play it. It's the difference between so many Jazz saxophonists who people loved as musicians and people versus the generations of Classical saxophonists who are hardly known outside the "Ivory Towers".
