Overview:
I'm a passionate instructor who loves teaching. I've been a musician since I was 6. I started playing piano, then moved on to percussion. By age 12, I played piano, drums and guitar fluently. I continued my education up to my masters from Texas A&M University in 2012. Upon graduating, I started teaching in the brazos county area. I moved closer to Houston to expand my career. Over the past 10 years I have made myself very comfortable and known in the music teacher community. All of my students in my studio participate in music theory as well as performance.
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching for 12 years. I have primarily taught guitar and piano. My students have ranged from ages 6 to Adult. I am also a performing musician and regularly perform. I have known I have wanted to be a music teacher since I was 14. I had many great mentors through music and I hope I can provide the same for my students! Each student is different and I love expanding my own teaching skills with students to find a way for them to learn. My students are encouraged to participate in the Texas Music Teachers Association State Theory Test, and to participate in 1 adjudicated event for performance.
METHODS USED
For beginning students that are children Inuse FJH Everybody's method book for guitar. For piano, I use My Piano Adventures series. For drums, I personally write the curriculum. All of my students also learn music theory to better them as a musician. I understand students have different learning techniques. So if the student is struggling with a concept or technique I will find a way to make it feel less like work and more like play! Don’t be surprised if I have your marching around to a certain rhythm!
LESSON STYLE
When meeting a student, I want to find their "currency". Meaning, I want to find what makes them want to work and practice. There is nothing more rewarding than working for a goal and accomplishing it. I like finding music that my student wants to learn and making a music theory lesson that compliments the instrument lesson. I would ideally like my job with my students to be temporary. What I mean by that is to fill them up with all the knowledge and skills that they will be able to pick up their instrument(s) and sight read a piece or learn a piece without my help.
