Overview:
I'm a passionate piano and music instructor who specialize in piano lessons for piano students as young as 4 years old up to retirees in their 70s. I aim to develop a strong music foundation and the love of music in all my students in a fun and loving environment. In 1991, I earned my Licentiate Diploma from Trinity College of London and started teaching in my own studio. I also had the opportunity to develop and conduct piano camps for Rhythm MP. I'm also an Early Childhood Music Educator who have taught all levels of Musikgarten, an Early Childhood Music Program in USA. I'm also a church pianist and have also been a church band's director for some years.
EXPERIENCE
My piano teaching experience dates back to 1986, when I was studying for my Associate Diploma. I was a piano teacher's assistant for a few years and later as a part time piano teacher. After I earned my Licentiate Diploma from Trinity College of London in 1991, I started teaching full time in my own studio. I've taught children and adults of all ages. I've also taught piano lessons in private, semi-private and group settings for more than 20 years. My students are encouraged to play different styles of music, take part in piano and music camps, recitals and many more.
METHODS USED
For very young students, I usually start them off by using non traditional approach - Aural Approach or with Faber or Piano Adventure method if parents prefer the Traditional Approach. With Aural Approach, students will learn to be able to play what they hear, just like learning a language, you learn to speak before learning to write and read. Shortly after, they learn to associate what they play with music notation. After they learn the basic fundamentals, they will be exposed to a variety of repertoire, depending on what motivates each individual. I aim to have my students to have a well rounded music education; to be truly music literate. As for teenagers, I would use music that attract students this age group. For Adults, I will see what type of music they are interested in, their goals and proceed accordingly. With all that being said, each student is different, their learning pace, style and interested are different, therefore I will tailor each lesson to cater to each individual's needs, so that every lesson will be engaging and fun, no matter their ability level so that they will gain the utmost from their piano lessons. I also integrate the use of technology, supplemental materials and games in my teaching.
LESSON STYLE
Nothing is more rewarding than to see the sense of accomplishment, the excitement and the joy on the faces of my students when they reached their goal be it playing a certain song, composition, etc. In order to always achieve this, I try to find various means and set individual and realistic goals to encourage them to achieve their final goal. Each student is an individual and I will find out their goal is and tailor each lesson accordingly. Every student will have their own personalized assignment book, where their goals will be documented so that when they reach certain milestone, they will have a sense of accomplishment.
