BA, California State University Long Beach, Linguistics Studied Music at Los Angeles Harbor College
I love discovering music and sharing my joy of music to others, finding inventive ways to motivate and inspire other people to create! In 2006-2008 I studied music theory, piano performance, and a variety of other music studies at Los Angeles Harbor College. I continued to study on my own, performing all the over the world writing my own songs and singing in community events, coffeeshops, etc. I have released an album, "Ask for Love" that comprises of songs I wrote displaying me playing guitar and singing
I have taught private lessons with the guitar, piano, didgeridoo, ukulele. I usually try to find out where the student is at and their goals and try to build off of that giving them tools to keep them going and to inspire and create insight. Each lesson I give them a focal point like learning a scale and get them to focus different musical aspects such working on fingering, rhythm, tone, loudness or softness, phrasing. I get them to practice that on their instrument til the next time I see them. Depending on how the lesson goes I will give a few tasks for the lesson or just one if needed or mix things up by learning a song to make it fun.
Depending on the level the student is at I will work with them where they are at and what is needed. If a beginning student I will usually start off with working on scales and use visual tools such as books to help aid the process. I will usually get the student to play or perform some sort of song no matter how simple it is, maybe even get them to make up their own song based off of what they learned. It is an organic process. I have an idea of what to teach that day but each lesson I will likely create from the last lesson
I have a laisse-faire style of teaching. I am very relaxed and like my students to be relaxed. I depends on how the lesson flows. If we are making ground and they are picking up a lot I will give them more and more tools to work with to keep them inspired and moving! I love seeing people get excited. I feel excited sometimes when they are excited. It is an infectious energy and is filled with life. It is a flow of inspiration, the student and the teaher feed off of each other. We are learning together.
Ryan is a very patient and clear teacher. He is a very dedicated and skilled musician, which shows in his extremely creative and personal approach with each student. Learning with him is very fun and I felt really comfortable learning about my guitar with him!
